Assuming you already were somewhat of a comical figure, and drove something oldish and noisyish, compared by your friends to a spacecraft, would you drive around own with an used fighter pilot helmet on your head, if only for the shits and the giggles?
I mean, these things can actually be bought on ebay! I'm not sure it's legal to own one in Brazil and not be in the "air" force, but legality hardly matters these days anyway.

I'm more of a flight cap, goggles, and scarf kind of guy. And I can't imagine that helmet would be good if the roof of your car is low already.

I say yes, do it! But I'm also kind of a strange guy, so consider the source.

Pfft. Amateur hour.

Go for it. I used to drive around with a motorcycle helmet in my car.

Maybe a Morgan 3-Wheeler or something, but probably not.

It's also a helicopter helmet. The boom mic gives it away.

I find that strange that it would be illegal to have one, though I don't pretend to have any knowledge about the laws in Brazil.
I love people that get into character with their car, if their car has some character. My friend wears a scarf and goggles driving his Miata. And there's an old British fellow who comes to Cars'n'Coffee around here in a Mini Moke and he shows up looking like this (minus the gun of course):

My father once drove a bus load of menonites from Winnipeg to SW Ontario through a snowstorm, with a leather flying helmet on. Are you that kind of interesting?

I am staring this because that pic used to be my profile pic.

Not necessarily. The Blue Angels use boom mics and there are civilian flight helmets with boom mics.

It's a bit low, but not too low that a helmet will scrape or wedge in. The seats are pretty low as well, so it'll probably fit!

Yup, it is. That's not the precise helmet I was looking at, just a Picture I took off Google images that happened to not be a digital model. :p

Brazil has lots of stupid laws about what you can/can't own, and military equipment is a major no-no. I don't know if a helmet would fall into that category, but hey, if there's anything the government can do to screw with you, they'll do it.

Well, I did drive over 5200 km in 5 days, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, through three countries, over the Andes on a whim... :p

That poor chinese pilot. You should really stop wearing people.

I tried to autocross with mine (complete with operational radio comms, oxygen mask, and joystick), but tech didn't accept mil std as equivalent to SA2010. It was still funny cause I was in my AF flight suit and jump boots.

Huh, that's something that would never have crossed my mind. I can understand restricting dangerous stuff, like guns and rocket launchers, but to not be allowed to own any military equipment? That just seems crazy to me. There are a lot of avenues here in the US to procure surplus military gear, stuff like clothing, tents, sleeping bags, that kind of thing. I like it because it's cheap and it works well. The best coats I own are my Navy peacoat, foul weather jacket, and arctic weather jacket (I got them while I was in, but you can buy them surplus easily).

So then the answer is yes.
![]() 03/13/2015 at 13:49 |

Nope, we don't have any of that in Brazil. I mean, I suppose you can buy some of the stuff used by the army because it wasn't made spcifically for the army. The army simply buys what's generally available. Anything made for the army and not normally available for the general public is off limits, as they don't sell surplus.
